Maintenance of gardens using water might seem like an easy task but it is not as easy as it seems. Plants need the correct amount of water. Excess water may cause damage to plants because of fungi and too little water may cause damage to the roots as it dries up. If you water the plants in the evening, insects attack them and if you do not water the plants from the correct height,  a reasonable amount of water evaporates before reaching the plants. An economic way of watering the plants is essential because the scarcity of water is increasing and in some countries, wasting water is a crime.  One should be careful of their garden maintenance freshwater habits.  Following are few do’s and don’ts which may help to check your garden maintenance freshwater routine and prevent from wasting water.

Dos and Don’ts:

1. Plants should be watered early morning when the sun is not strong. In the morning heat of the sun is mild so the ground is also cool and thus the foliage does not absorb the water quickly. Water should be sprayed in the gardens during the evening as wet leaves are home to fungus and insects.

2. The garden should be watered deeply and in gaps so that the water can reach the bottom of the plant, i.e., the roots. It helps the plant in absorbing important minerals from water. Watering the plants in the garden lightly is not good for the garden as it causes shallow growth of plants.

3. Plants should be watered right at the bottom but one has to make sure that the foliage is not as wet as fungus attacks the foliage in that case. The plant should not be watered from the top of the plant because of the shape of the plant; the water might not reach the bottom of the plant.

4. Irrigation systems should be used to water the plants as it allows the water to penetrate and actually affect the growth of the plant. Using sprinklers is not good for the plants because the water gets lost in the air due to evaporation. It does not reach the roots of the plant.

Garden maintenance freshwater is not as easy as it in the process needed to be done in an efficient manner. Thus, there are different ways of irrigating water which makes the task simple, easy and convenient for all. These kind of irrigation systems are good for plants too as they do not water them excessively.  They are:

1. Soaker Hoses - This is a very popular mechanism to water plants. Garden maintenance freshwater task becomes easy because of soaker hoses. It sprays water right from the bottom of the equipment and wets the plants. Soaker hoses are attached to solid hoses to water the entire garden.

2. Drip System – It is a slow process but very effective because the water reaches the plant slowly and thus provides time to the soil to absorb water. This method prevents runoff of water. There are various types of drip emitters like micro-sprayers, drippers, soakers, and bubblers.  These types of equipment are easily customizable for each type of plants. The different types of drip equipment should be used in different zones and not together.

3. Rotor Systems –  This irrigation system is much better than a traditional spray head. They spread water at a significantly slower rate and thus give time to plants to absorb the water. These rotors can now spread water at a distance of less than half an inch per hour and thus give plenty of time to the plants to absorb water. The radius of these rotors can be easily changed.  So it is suitable for the areas where the other garden maintenance freshwater techniques are not apposite.

With better techniques and a little knowledge, maintaining garden becomes an easy task. Just avoiding a few habits of watering and installing a good irrigation system ensures a good garden and to save water.
