What Is The Reason Behind Making The Garden Mulch?

Writer: Anna BrakeAnna Brake

The gardens that are mulched genuinely grow very healthy. It is a measure which saves time. The gardener prefers this measure to be the best. Whether it is to grow vegetables in the garden or flowers, the procedure of garden mulch can be easily applied. This also helps to reduce weeds in the garden but it should be done in a proper manner. The garden mulch also allows the gardener or the person who maintains the garden to spend less time watering the plants, fighting against the pest problems and also weeding. The procedure of garden mulch is explained nicely below:

The mulching process involves two basic steps. Firstly, the mulch should be laid upon the soil that has already been weeded, and secondly, the layer of mulch should be thick so that new weeds do not come up.  The garden mulch has the tendency to retain moisture and can slow down the warming of the soil. For creating some shady spots two to three inch layer of garden mulch will be fine. On the other hand, if it is to discourage the weeds completely then the dimension of the layer must be four to six inches.

In the springtime, the garden mulch is to be kept away from the source of water so that the growth becomes faster. If the mulch is made wet and then placed against the stems of the vegetables or flowers, it can cause them to rot. That is why it is preferred to keep the layer just one inch away from the stems as well as crowns. The mulch can also pile up against the woody stems of the trees as well as shrubs and can lead to rotting. It is also preferred to keep the garden mulch six to twelve inches away from the trunks.

If the bed of the garden is filled with weeds by any chance, then the technique of double-mulching would be the best choice to prevent weeds to enter the roots. The best way is to plant at the assigned place and then water them nicely and then spread newspapers over it and pile the garden mulch on the top.

The Choices Of The Best Mulch For The Garden

There are two kinds of garden mulch. One of them is the organic mulch and the other one is the inorganic mulch. Both of them have a similarity that they both discourage weeds. On one hand, the organic ones include compost, chopped leaves, shredded bark, straw, pine needles, grass clippings, sawdust, wood chips, and even sometimes paper. On the other hand, the inorganic mulch includes geotextiles and also black plastic.

As the organic mulch tries to improve the soil in a better way when it decomposes, the inorganic mulches do not break down and enrich the soil. For example, to warm the soil and allow the soil to radiate heat during the night, the best choice would be placing black plastics. These plastics also keep the eggplant and small-sized tomatoes in a very cozy manner.

The things that must be kept in mind before using the mulch in the garden are as follows:

  1. For avoiding the crops to rot or even get fungus, the mulch must be at least an inch away from them.

  2. Forgiving the nutrients to cultivation, at least half of the garden must be left for grass clippings.

  3. Sun-dried clippings must be used in the lawn and also should not be used in gardens where a toxic pest control has been done.

  4. The organic mulch has the tendency to rob the nitrogen as it is quite decomposing in nature.
