What is The Use of Sandstone Rock?

Sandstone rock is a type of sedimentary rock that is found in many parts of the world. The most common places where you can find these rocks, known as sandstone rocks, are the beds of lakes, rivers, and oceans. Sandstone rock can be used to create several specific products and also as a construction or building material.

The Formation of Sandstone Rock

This rock is formed on the beds of lakes, rivers, and oceans, over many years, when the small particles of sand, rock, and dirt are collected at the bottom of the water and eventually are made into the hard layers of sandstone rock. The quality and look of the sandstone rock changes with the different types of minerals that are present in the rock. However, the most common material that you can find in sandstone rocks is quartz.

The other mineral which you may find in sandstone is feldspar. The sand particles that are the main component of the sandstone rock are held together with several cementing agents like clays, calcite, iron oxide, calcium carbonate, and gypsum. The sandstone rock, which has gypsum or clay as the cementing agent, tends to be softer in nature compared to the other sandstone rocks.

Types of Sandstone Rock

Mainly the environment where the components of sandstone are deposited determines the type and nature of the sandstone. How the grains are sorted, the size of the component particles, and the structure of the formed sediment usually determine the types of sandstone rock.

Sandstones Can Be Divided Into Three Main Categories:

1. Quartzose sandstones (made of beach sand, mostly quartz).

2. Arkosic sandstones (made of feldspar).

3. Argillaceous sandstones (made of quartz grains with silt or clay in the interstitial spaces).

Different Uses of Sandstone Rock

#1. Used as a Building Mater: Sandstone is very easy to work with. It is strong, can easily resist weathering, and has slip resistant properties. For this reason, sandstone rock is often used as a popular raw material for paving, architectural monuments, or buildings. Sandstone is also a popular component in creating stones for gristmills and grindstones. Sandstone rocks are also used as aquifers.

The sandstone rock is often used in creating floors and paving in commercial buildings and outdoor areas.

#2. Used for Filtering Water: As sandstone rock is porous, water can easily filter through it, and hence, a large amount of water can be stored within the sandstone. This unique filtering procedure can easily remove different pollutants from the water. Thus, sandstone rock is used in water filters.

#3. Used for Ornamental Purposes: This rock can be cut and polished to make several ornamental features like bookends, gravestones, fireplaces, and clocks.

Some other ornamental products that are made from sandstone are garden furniture, garden arches, and many crafts and arts products.

#4. Used in the Chemical Production Industry: Sandstone is used in the development of load-bearing walls. It is also used in the chemical production industry for creating walls and floors because of the alkaline and acid resistance of the stone.

#5. Used for Creating Different Products: By combining sandstone with some other materials, many other products can be developed; one of them is glassware. Thus, sandstone rock in used in producing glassware products.

#6. Used as Filler: Sandstone is crushed and then is combined with materials like asphalt or concrete for use as fillers for jetties and dikes.

#7. Used as Cladding: As sandstone is resistant to saline air thus, this rock is also used as cladding for the garden, exterior of buildings, and landscaping products in coastal areas.

Therefore, sandstone rock has a wide variety of uses due to its unique formation and features.
